Ear Infections Symptoms
Ear Redness or Ear Swelling
If your ear is infected, it may appear red and feel tender or sensitive to the touch. In extreme cases, it may bleed.
Ear Pain and Popping
While it may be normal for your ears to pop or be in pain when you fly, they should not hurt every day. Please see a doctor if you’re experiencing severe pain.
Hearing Loss
Inflammation or fluid buildup in the ear can cause hearing loss. Although usually temporary, it can become permanent if left untreated for too long.
Types of Ear Infections
Most people don't know that ear infections can occur in different areas of the ear. Confirming the location and type of ear infection will help to determine the correct treatment.
Middle Ear Infections
When fluids build up in the middle ear—the air-filled space behind the eardrum—it leads to a middle ear infection (or otitis media). It is often caused by a bacterium or virus.
Outer Ear Infections
Also known as "swimmer’s ear", this condition occurs when moisture or trauma in the ear canal creates a moist environment that allows bacteria or fungus to grow.
Recurring Ear Infections
Children often experience frequent ear infections due to bacterial or viral infections in the middle ear that lead to fluid buildup.
