Types of Ear Tubes

Most ear tubes are temporary and placed to drain middle ear fluid or prevent recurrent ear infections. They typically last 6 months to a year.

Long-Term Ear Tubes

Some patients need ear tubes that last longer than standard ones. Long-term ear tubes are specially designed with longer phalanges to help prevent extrusion.

In-Office Ear Tubes

We can place ear tubes in the office for many adults. This quick and convenient procedure involves numbing the ear drum and using a microscope to precisely place the ear tube.

Reasons for Ear Tubes

Chronic Ear Fluid, Hearing Loss, and Recurrent Ear Infections

Ear tubes are small and hollow cylinders inserted into the eardrum. They may be used to treat middle ear infections that have resulted in partial hearing loss due to the buildup of fluid. While the tubes drain the fluid, they also let air into the ear to prevent further accumulation.

FAQs about Ear Tubes

  • Are ear tubes safe?

Yes, ear tubes (also called tympanostomy tubes) are generally considered safe. They are commonly used to treat chronic ear infections or hearing issues in both children and adults. The procedure involves a small surgical operation, where a tiny tube is inserted into the eardrum to help ventilate the middle ear and prevent the accumulation of fluid.

  • How much do tympanostomy ear tubes cost?

The cost of tympanostomy tubes can vary. If the procedure is performed in an outpatient surgical center, it is much less expensive than if it is performed in a hospital.

  • Is my child too young for ear tubes?

Children as young as 6 months of age may require ear tubes for frequent ear infections or hearing loss caused by fluid build-up in the ears. Ear tubes are commonly performed in children between the ages of 1 to 3 years old, but they can be beneficial for older children and adults as well.

  • Do you perform ear tubes awake in the office or Tula Tubes?

Yes, Kentuckiana ENT physicians can perform in-office ear tubes awake during an office visit. Many of these ear tubes are placed in adults and older children. The Tula Tube system uses a special device to perform the procedure in younger children. If you have a child suffering from frequent ear infections, request an appointment with one of our caring ENT doctors to get the best care for your child.

  • Do ear tubes cause eardrum abnormalities leading to hearing loss?

Ear tubes are generally considered a safe and effective treatment for chronic ear infections and fluid buildup that can lead to hearing loss. While they are not typically associated with causing eardrum abnormalities, there is a small risk of complications that may include scarring or thinning of the eardrum. However, these issues are relatively uncommon and the benefits of ear tubes in preventing hearing loss and other complications from ear infections often outweigh the risks. It's important to discuss any concerns with an ENT specialist who can provide guidance based on individual health needs.
