Causes of Tonsillitis

Bacteria and Viruses

While tonsillitis is usually caused by a virus, bacteria can sometimes be responsible.

Strep Exposure

The most common type of bacteria causing tonsillitis is Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus). Exposure to people with a tonsil infection from this type of bacteria can lead to recurrent tonsillitis.

Treatment for Recurrent Tonsillitis

Recurrent tonsillitis is when a person has tonsillitis multiple times in a year Though recurrent tonsillitis is more common in children, adults can also experience it. Treatment  ranges from rest and medication to surgery performed to remove infected tonsils (tonsillectomy).
